International maritime regulations demand a reduction of sulphur-oxide (SOₓ) emissions from ships. SOx scrubbers – exhaust gas cleaning systems – provide a cost-effective alternative to using expensive ultra-low-sulphur fuels.
A scrubber sprays exhaust gases with water so sulphur oxides are neutralised.
- Open-loop systems use seawater and discharge the cleaned water according to regulations.
- Closed-loop systems recirculate freshwater with added alkali to control pH, discharging only a small treated fraction.
- Hybrid systems combine both modes, allowing flexible operation depending on local restrictions.
